The ferry, the bridge, the opera house, the sail boat, Luna Park and so on, it was simply magic.

I also like the free flowing presence of chaos and disorder in my work environment from time to time as it breaks down my confinement's and presents me with simply, what is.

It is these environments in which greatness arises for the reason's that here are zero preconceived boundaries and borders of influence. Anything goes. Let go!

Being tamed and confined by the neatness is often the undoing of what we are here to do, I appreciate letting go and free flow.

Funny thing about this race meeting was that because it was so far from the Gold Coast dad packed the van to the brim with his Pro Shop gear to sell at the track which only made space for us to take one bike to race, our Diamond Back. With that said Chad and I both had to compromise on the set up of the bike; Chad got the smaller bars which I had to make do with, and I got the longer cranks which Chad had to deal with.

So essentially, between each of our races, dad had to do a quick pit stop on the bike changing over our respective number plates and then raising and lowering the seat and bars for each of us. It obviously worked as we both won.

I showed them this photo and they were like “Ohhhhh shit. Ok. That long.”

April 1987 was the first year The Bones Brigade toured Australia, it was Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain, Steve Steadham and Tony’s brother, Steve.

This photo was shot at Rainbow Bay/Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast of Australia, long before the Super Bank got its name. Tony, Steve, Dad and I were fresh out of the water after a dawn patrol session when dad took the opportunity to shoot this memorable photo of the two sets of brothers; The Hawks and the The Barties.

At the time Tony was sponsored by his local surf shop in Carlsbad, ‘Carlsbad Pipeline’ who made him this custom surfboard. What you would give to have this surfboard in your collection today.

I am grateful for being a skateboarder and seeing the world through a skateboarders eyes. IFYKYK.

I remember this day like it was yesterday. This was a Sunday meeting at the Murwillumbah BMX track. Dad went down with the van jam packed full of gear (as was the norm through the early 80’s) and I jumped in to go give him a hand selling for the day with zero intention of racing, yet through my bike in anyway.

We arrived super early to set up. Once done, I rode the track for half hour and got the urge that I might want to race. Remember, I had no intention of racing when we left home hence I never packed any racing gear nor helmet. Hence the reason why I’m racing in a loose pair of corduroy pants (my right pant leg bound by electrical type as to not get it caught in the chain wheel with the left one flapping about) and my 80’s multi-coloured yellow zipped Billabong jacket.

Lucky for me dad has some extra gloves and an off the shelf open-face helmet with JT Racing mouth guard to use.

The moral of this share, this post is to remind myself and everyone who reads this that no matter our age, our intention’s, or our abilities, we can break the mould and change our intention’s when the urge presents. Looking back on this photo and the feeling I had over the 16 hour period renews that inner child like nature to give shit a go and have fun with it. You might just win a race you never had any intention of entering. I did.

With time, and age these urges have somewhat waned because of bullshit excuses, you know the ones we all tell ourselves. The ones in silence that no one hears. Well, in recent years I have been tipping my hat back into events that I am not historically fit to enter yet do so due to this very same urge coming over me, the one that says to me “Fu@k it” and Go!

There’s only one way to find out and deal with what comes up when it comes up. And that is to get in there. See you out here.

We all have them, every single one of us. Stacks of books, photos, laundry, dishes, pancakes, boxes, bricks and timber to name but a few.

To be the lifelong autodidact I am, having such resources is imperative to my learnings. It is important I have certain Stacks close in proximity to my personal self, things which are at arms reach if you will so they’re easily accessible for when I call upon them.

Two Stacks in particular adorn my environment no matter my location; Stacks of books on my desk, bedside table, and lounge for quick and easy access to learn with (If you want to know more about why I have the physical books and Dr Anne Mangens work, reach out and let’s have the conversation in person), the second being my online Tech Stack (Notion, Evernote, Trello, Notes, Substack, Affinity, Google, Perplexity, Claude, Deep Seek, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp, Spotify etc).

The coupling of these Stacks is a fantastic and ever present reminder, the prompter if you will which ignites me to do what I do on a daily basis.

A few years back I wrote the article below. It was in two parts for the reason that it reflected (for me personally) two pivotal skateboarder’s (Eric Dressen + Jay Adams) in history that inspired the act of skateboarding so much that they made me want to roll on my board every single day, even still to this day, long before the main-stream classed it as a Sport.

P.S. Skateboarding has never been nor will it be a sport.

Skateboardings Unfettered Discipline to Vision. (1/2) The Story.

So, how does the vision of a skateboarder relate to the world of business specifically?

To answer this question, allow me to go back to the 80’s.

“1986, my family; Mum, Dad (Big Wave), brother (Chad) and I went on a family Skatecation to the US for the very first time. Memories of the trip, the first of now over 60+ trips to the USA was by in far the most memorable. Memorable for many reasons of which this man, this skateboarder, Eric Dressen being the primary one.

It was a bleak, dreary, cold, damp, stormy sunset when we found ourselves cruising (Chad and I skating, mum and dad in tow) the Venice Beach boardwalk. Heading south along the famed beach sidewalks we found ourselves upon the now defunct Pavilion’s. The Venice Pavilions of the 80’s looked like something straight out of ‘The Warriors’ movie to us, a dystopian wasteland.

However, it was a rad place for us to be as we searched out any signs of skate life we could, especially something to skate like the classic make-shift quarter-pipes we saw on the pages of Thrasher Magazine, to no avail. They were gone!

This didn’t bother us though as we were so psyched to just be there, in the presence of this magical place we had only previously seen in print. We cruised around for a bit, mum with a keen eye on us as the homeless locals poked their heads out from their make shift homes amongst the pavilion’s when we came upon a set of 7-10 stairs that went from the top edge of one of the footpaths down between the concrete pavilions onto the boardwalk below which wrapped around the beach side. From memory I would hazard a guess as being 20 or so feet wide from the bottom step to the sandy beach edge. It was here, when all of a sudden dad, who was standing at the sandy edge of the path yelled out to Chad and I to get out of the way as he could hear someone coming.

Clack, CLack, CLAck, CLACk, CLACK ..........

Chad and I moved quickly hearing the all to common noise of an impending skater heading our way fast. Real FAST!

Then, standing at the bottom of the stairs this guy launches himself, ollieing down the set, landing all fours, then cess-sliding off into the sand. I was like “Holy SHIT!!!!! it’s Eric “FUCKing” Dressen!”

Eric picked himself up, dusted the sand off himself, banged his board down on the concrete on all fours (wheels) to get the sand off his board and out of his bearings, looked at us, gave a little nod (acknowledging us), ran back up the stairs and skated away out of sight up high above. I was in complete shock and stoked to high heaven!

Not knowing if he was coming back to do them again, I grabbed the camera ready if he was to attempt them again, sure enough, Clack, CLack, CLAck, CLACk ...POP!

I can still remember the pop his tail made as he ollied from that top step. It was the sweetest, crispest ollie I’ve ever heard in my life. A part of that maybe because the view I had through my viewfinder of him sailing down that flight of stairs. He was going just a fast this time as he did his first attempt, yet this time he landed and I do not know how to this day he was able to carve his way around the footpath missing the sand all together and proceeded to push off, southbound down the beach only as Eric can do.

Eric Dressen was the first pro street skateboarder I ever saw in the wild and someone I respect beyond words. You Eric made the world a better place that day for that 14 year old boy from half way around the world and I thank you for that ever so fleeting moment time. It has stuck with me for almost almost 40 years now, educating me on what it means and takes to be a skateboarder and how we view the world, our environment’s, and the ecosystem we thrive in.

Skateboarders often view the world through a lens of possibility and creativity, seeing potential in everyday urban landscapes that others generally overlook. This unique perspective stems from our need to navigate and interact with various environment in ways that continuously challenge conventional uses and benchmarks. Keys aspects being;

• Reimagine Everyday Spaces. They remove bipedal restrictions adopting quad-rolling vision.

Shared Vision. Skateboarders often connect through a shared way of seeing the world, bonding over the ability to transform the mundane into the extraordinary.

Connection with Environment. They develop an intimate relationship with their environment, noticing nuances others manny overlook, such as the trajectory to success, the smoothness of a ledge/goal, or the steepness of a hill/ascension.

Adaptability. Adapt to the imperfections and uniqueness of events/surroundings, turning cracks and uneven pavement into conquerable challenges rather than obstacles.

A Community Perspective. Skateboarders often thrive in spaces where traditional uses are subverted, embodying a sense of freedom and defiance of societal norms resulting in exponential advancements in skill and execution of their craft.

The Focus.

With pure and absolute certainty, we skateboarders see our Visions with such clarity that the near attempt to achieve it is fraught with imminent unknowns and potential danger to our bodies and businesses that hesitation can injure us badly. So badly in fact that it can take us off our boards for weeks, months, and quite possibly a year. Key Focus aspects;

Mental Focus

• Concentration.

  • The ability to stay present in the moment. Blocking out distractions.

• Resilience. Handling failures, falls and set backs with a growth mindset.

• Outlook. View learning opportunities precisely as that. Stepping stones.

• Patience. Mastery of new skills, requiring dedication to incremental progress.

• Visualisation. Rehearse tricks prior to attempting improves confidence.

• Confidence. Believing in their ability to execute complex manoeuvres and push their limits.

Technical Focus

• Master Basics. Build solid fundamental techniques crucial to complex principles.

• Consistency. Ability to execute tricks consistently towards Olympic Gold Medals.

• Progression. You must focus on progressively challenging yourself. Your Entity.

Strategic Focus

• Goal Setting. Whether specific tricks, improving style, set clear achievable’s.

• Spot Selection. Choosing the right environment; skatepark, street spot, venue.

• Risk Management. Understanding personal limits and weighing ‘Risk vs. Reward’.

This one is personal. I have been sitting with this for quite some time now, as to whether or not to post it, and whether or not it brings value to those who read this. Then something changed. Something presented in a way that I was not expecting, nor anticipating. More on this later.

Saturday, March 21st was World Down Syndrome Day. I wasn’t aware of this until speaking with a cousin recently who made me aware of it which lead us to a discussion about Darren and Jason. Darren and Jason are cousins of ours that we grew up with together; Jason was my elder by 6 years with Darren being younger by 6 years and they were both one of us, or was it that we were one with them?

Point is, it doesn’t even matter, we were simply kids being kids and doing kid things and Darren more so was right there with us. Always tagging along in fun and play with his older cousins, Jason, not so much as he was older and would more often be doing his thing. You see, Darren and Jason both have cognitive and movement disabilities and were different to us, we noticed, and it did not matter.

Darren has Down Syndrome and although we had no real comprehension what that was at the time of our youth we went on with our kid business to which Darren was right in on, and in on it big time. My memories of those younger years was that things were jam packed full of fun, laughter and all around fantastic times playing.

It has been a good number of decades since I last saw Darren, however, I ever so randomly crossed paths with Jason this past Mothers Day weekend at a Fish N Chip shop where we sat and chatted for a couple of minutes catching on life when Jason informed me that he and Darren were doing just fine. So fine in fact that Jason informed that he is now retired and fishing daily whilst Darren is currently the longest standing employee at the once 5 Star Versace Hotel now operating as the Imperial Hotel on the Gold Coast.

That’s right, Darren is to this day the longest standing employee of the hotel. His tenure there has been in excess of 25 years of service to their guests and is a household fixture amongst all staff, team members and revisiting guests who have all come to know and love Darren for what he brings.

You see, I think it is in the very nature of those with Down Syndrome that they bring an unbridled presence of sheer joy and wonderment for what lay directly in front of them. The present moment, where nothing else matters or exists except for right now. Something we can all take a leaf out of their book. Their open heartedness, kindness, reverence and deep respect to treat all fellow humans the same, as equals and as a fellow brother and sister is a quality somewhat lost in today’s modern society.

The impact bestowed upon me by sharing those youthful years and many moments with Darren whilst playing as kids has most certainly left an indelible mark on my spirit. The compassion I hold to this day and the respect to hold space for those that may be a little bit different to me allows me to provide safe spaces and a right of passage for all to learn, share, flow and grow together.

I am so proud to have had Darren and Jason as a key part of my childhood knowing now that what I shared and taught them pales in comparison to what they shared and taught me.

For me, there is an enormous take-away from these experiences; It is that everyone has a place and it is up to us to allow them to show us where our’s is in their lives.

Darren and Jason, I thank you for being my cousins and all the wonderful and amazing memories we created and shared throughout our youth. I equally am grateful for the values that I have carried forward into adulthood and corporate life be cause of those interactions we shared as kids simply playing. Thank you.

*It is the grounded nature of who we are, what we bring and the value we add that often comes left of centre for many that are incumbents in sectors of the corporate life. This is what I openly challenge and explore with my clients to impact their organisations in ways of positive clarity and direction, taking their businesses to unprecedented heights through safe spaces, open dialogue and meaningful presence.

21 March is World Down Syndrome Day. This official day was created to celebrate the lives of people with Down syndrome and to make sure they have the same freedoms and opportunities as everybody else.

This land is something else, the National Park and its headland is of other worlds, it’s energy lines are real and ever present and something which soothes, calibrates and brings presence to my soul.

Today is a great day to wash off 2025 and welcome in 2026 with open arms which this image so beautifully highlights.

I am very grateful to have access to these lands and give thanks to it.

That’s right 4:30 in the morning.

And with that, many of our golden beaches are flocked to at this time to get prime spots with only the early birds baring fruit. This year I was one of those with my own little patch of grass on the banks of the Broadwater to set up for the day, but enough about that.

The real prize is not just the golden sands, green blue warm waters to bathe in ,or the summer heat, the real gift for me at Christmas is the breaking of bread with family and friends and none more so than this make shift kitchen as pictured. It is moments in time like this that I truly treasure, a few butane burners, some cast iron pans, crisps, hot sauce, bread rolls smothered in butter, a few cooked snags with onion and the mandatory local beer, XXXX.

This was my Christmas and I absolutely loved every minute of it. Thanks Santa!
