Apple + Ridleys 40th.

“Today we celebrate the first glorious anniversary of the Information Purification Directives.”

”On January 24th Apple Computer will introduce Macintosh. And you'll see why 1984 won't be like '1984.”

What you just read was the complete script for the commercial aptly titled ‘1984’ which was aired during Super Bowl XVIII on January 22nd, 1984 and was only 1 minute in length.

Inspired and based on George Orwell’s dystopian novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, this commercial was directed and brought to life by Ridley Scott introducing the Apple Macintosh personal computer to the world for the first time. The Macintosh 128K.

The airing of this commercial was called a watershed moment and a masterpiece in the advertising world. Any wonder, considering still to this day when viewing the commercial an eery element exudes the dystopian quality Orwell’s writing purveyed in the pages of 1984.

From the zombiesque mask wearing viewers watching Big Brother (David Graham) speaking to them with heavy grey overtones on the big screen, to the riot guards with their shields in hand, dressed in their clad grey uniforms, to the baton raising officers charging down the aisle, this entire clip reeks of dystopia.

That is until Anya Major comes running ahead of them wearing a white sports top, orange shorts all the while brandishing a large sledge hammer which she spins around (like a discus thrower) 1…2…3…4 times round before she lets rip, releasing her grasp of the hammer and smashing the screen. Destroying Big Brother in the process, quashing his narrative and breaking the tranced consciousness state of the mind-numbed audience who previously sat idle, watching and being directed by the voice on the big screen. Big Brother.

Also interesting is the commercial is no where to found on Apple’s YT channel.

Journalling Gratitude.

2023 for me was a year of completion and closure, something in many ways I had been working on for well over a decade.

A key driver of this was, and continues to be my journalling of gratitude. Sometimes daily. Sometimes weekly. The point is I journal what I need to when I need to as not only do I find it being cathartic in nature, it is also powerful in creation and manifestation.

Yet, I continue to do it.

Write. Something we all do daily and yet something we do not always do.

‘so you want to be a writer?’, a poem by Charles Bukowski, German born, moved to the USA when he was two.

Written in 1992, two years before his death (1920-1994), this poem is the embarkation to me of what truly drives us to do what we do. For many, this poem is taken literally.

For me however, it is one which is inferential by nature, yet viscerally real.

I believe Bowie said it best regarding his rocket; “Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare!”

I dare.

Welcome to the first Edition of CLAY PLAY ~ Beyond Prometheus.

THE CLAY.

Personal memoir: River clay, Swami Buddhananda, 2023 as completion.

I have always had a deep fascination for things Earthly, why, I’m not entirely sure.

However, I do know that this ‘always’ I refer to is deeply rooted in something I can only describe as being larger than myself, yet equally a part of me.

My grandfather once told me that; “The greatest story ever told, was the story we told (tell) ourselves.” and it is for this reason I have finally decided to commence penning my Clay. My creations, collaborations, observations, journeys, forethoughts, destinations and more.

I was all of 12 years old when my true introduction to Clay was made clear. For years prior I was like any kid who lived by the river and sit on its banks, and in the weir plying what felt soft, smooth and malleable underfoot, between my toes, and in hands through my fingers with smooth round river stones creating and exploring what this natural and grounding substance was, at the behest of this kid.

Clay and I became one and got to know each other well in those days.

Then, everything changed. Whilst visiting an auntie, sitting on the landing of her internal staircase watching her make cups of tea in the kitchen for the adults; my auntie, mum, dad, and Swami Buddhananda who said something so nonchalantly as he glided through the kitchen that it changed my everything about Clay;

“Clay, well that’s simple. Clay is everything. It is creation. For without clay there would be nothing.”

It was at this point my interaction with not simply Clay, but all things creative, visioned, collaborated, viewed, created, observed and interacted with in the world which enveloped me, expanded. This paradigm shift has not once waned and remains to this day a literal pilot-light of tactile, implicit and explicit connection and knowing to things both in awareness and the fortitude to be mindful of what is not and allowing it to be. Although the flame has been alight and always burning, it was the completion of 2023 where much like that day in my aunties kitchen, a refined shift presented.

This presentation turned leaves of pages which I had written and experienced in the prior decades where closure on a Grand-Scale culminated. Whether it be; meeting my grandson for the first time, turning 50, my team completing the 96km Kokoda Challenge as one, the kids all coming of age, or the closure on past trauma’s being communicated to someone near and dear who listened, 2023 presented it all.

In a strange, not so strange way it all makes sense. This is not because it presented itself, rather, be cause a long time ago there were things I put in place which were viewed from afar that I knew with time and the lore of gestation would come to bear fruit, 2023 was precisely that.

Now, 2024 is the commencement of new chapters, journeys, fresh relationship’s and communication streams opened to which past family, coming of age, rules + regulatory confinement’s, private licence plates + schools, sitting atop of hills and the requirement of attachment wholly dissipates. Beyond Prometheus!

THE FIRE.

Humane Ai Pin, Imran Chaudhri and what disappearing devices mean.

May 10th 2023 saw Imran Chaudhri, CEO and Co-Founder of Humane Inc. showcase what he envisions the future to be where Ai enables our devices to disappear.

Imran’s Vancouver TED Talk was received globally by viewers who eagerly awaited this 22 year veteran of Apple Advanced Technology Group, and Apple to hear and more importantly see first-hand what his vision and next leap in device design was.

It is no surprise that Imran’s presentation is one of TEDs Top 10 presentations of 2023 with 5.2 million views (3.4M TED & 1.8M YT) 01/10/24.

Like all things new, foreign, and not entirely understood, commentary around the Ai Pin was mixed with many on social platforms concerned about the front facing camera and privacy. This somewhat alarmed me in that such concerns were being voiced when there are a reported 3Billion Android and 2Billion iPhone devices sold to date globally.

Let’s say 60% of those 5B devices are in active use leaving us with 3B of which each of these devices both possess two cameras, front and back facing, some with LiDAR.

Now, of these now 6B cameras that are currently active in a large percentage of everyday society where cameras peek and poke above jean/shirt pockets, view our surroundings whilst talking on the phone, using them on PT, in airports and scrolling through social media etc. cameras capture all of our actions through either primary use (in our own hands), or secondary use (via proximal location capture) by way of being in visual proximity to a cameras site with and without our awareness. So why then the hang-up on the Ai Pins front facing camera? Is it that people have simply forgotten their smart phones already possess two cameras and that they’re oblivious to this fact.

How do you feel about the Ai pins front facing camera? Is it a concern or do you see that we already live in a camera flooded society as it is?

Initial points of contention from first adopters is the fee with many gripeing about the initial outlay costs, coupled then with the monthly subscription fees which in time will be ironed out (or not) to adopt the scale of consumer buy-in required for Humane to gain mass adoption. Let it be known though, this is the first of what will inevitably be the proving ground for what, and how we continue to adopt and use Ai technology.

The price for the Ai Pin Complete System starts at $699 and also requires an active subscription of $24/month not including taxes and fees.

I am on the fence with the Ai Pin, I feel there’s a place for it yet I think its off the mark a touch. Where I do not know. Perhaps it’s simply one of those deer facing bright lights moment. I like what Humane are working to achieve, there seems to be something for me though I can’t quite put my finger on about it. I like it. I like it allot. I’m simply not convinced in the most complex of ways though. A question I would like to see answered in time is will it be ill-fated with the life-logging camera device known as the Narrative Clip in 2016, or will it succeed. I want the Ai Pin to succeed.

The craft of a true word-smith is spellbinding. Word-smithery is a skill for which we all use daily, a craft that is noted above in the writing of hymns for example.

Contextual analysis is the process of breaking down a complex issue or problem in order to better make sense of it. The Triarchic Theory of Intelligence or Three Forms of Intelligence, formulated by psychologist Robert Sternberg, aims to go against the psychometric approach to intelligence and take a more cognitive approach, which leaves it to the category of the cognitive-contextual theories.
